What Makes You Important?
Djo – End of Beginning
As of writing this in April of 2024 the song “End of Beginning” by DJO is currently sitting top of the music charts. It is also the soundtrack of almost every video you scroll through on TikTok and Instagram.
Notably written and performed by Joe Keery of “Stranger Things” fame, this song was released in 2022, two years prior to me writing this newsletter.
There’s no denying that this song is of high quality and worthy of it’s success, but why has it taken two years to hit the heights it’s reaching now?
The short answer is, maybe there is no good reason.
Cast your mind back to 2022.
TikTok was still the powerhouse social media platform it is today and Stranger Things was as popular as ever.
Surely this made for the perfect storm for DJO to release this song and be an instant hit?
Apparently not.
Sometimes things just don’t happen how we expect or want them to.
We can prepare meticulously, have all of our ducks in a row and still the result will not be as we hoped.
This does not mean that whatever it was we did was not worth doing.
As we are seeing now, this song has reached heights I’m sure Joe never could’ve expected two years on.
If he had have known how successful it might have been two years after release, he likely would have released a lot more music to this point.
Van Gogh
Another famous albeit tragic example of this is Vincent Van Gogh.
Much has been spoken and written about Van Gogh, however something not all may know is that only one of his works were sold before his death.
For this reason and others, he often thought of himself as a failure.
He died in 1890 rumored to say in his final words, “the sadness will last forever”
Ultimately, he never saw the heights that his art would take him to posthumously, with people all over the world knowing and admiring his work throughout the 150 years since.
Although he didn’t live to see his success, does this mean that his art was only impressive and valuable after he died?
Well, no.
The Message
As in the example of Djo, the world and the people around you decide what is valuable or important with their masses of eyes or feet or ears.
Humans seem to put their attention to what they believe to be important in that space and time.
As we see in both these examples though, this doesn’t mean that what’s not gaining attention here and now is not important or lacks value.
The lesson I take from these two is this;
Don’t give up whatever it is that you’re creating, working on, or trying to accomplish just because it hasn’t received the external results you had hoped for.
As long as you believe in what you do and you remain consistent you will build something that, if nothing else, you alone can be proud of.
The fact that you exist, are alive, and can create, is proof enough of your importance.
Not just because it is where the world chooses to put its attention.
